What is a Super 8 wedding film?

We capture your wedding with reels of film rather than with a digital camera. Super 8 is a type of film stock developed by Kodak in 1965, and is known for its distinct nostalgic, grainy image. After filming, the reel of film needs to be sent off to a professional lab, where it can be processed and scanned. If you watch one of our videos, you’ll be struck by the effect the film has

This type of film used to be the standard for home movies, but as digital cameras became cheaper, smaller, and easier to use, the film industry has been slowly moving away from it. However, we think that there is something special about film that digital cannot replicate.

Why is it called Super 8? The "8mm" refers to the width of the film. And the "Super" shows that it is a higher resolution than its predecessor.

Super 8 wedding film vs digital video

There is a mechanical and chemical difference between film and digital. But the real difference is feel and the emotion that you get when watching it. The super 8mm film that we use produces beautiful images that glow. When you watch them you are immediately taken back to that very moment. The film is imperfect with bright and dark spots, with scratches, with grain, but we think this adds life and movement to your memories.

There is also a practical difference between using film and digital. Film is finite, and expensive to buy and process. Because of this, its impossible to shoot as much coverage as digital, without racking up a huge bill. We will therefore take extra care and select shots carefully.

Film has a set expose, which means the film we choose has a light/brightness which it works best at. We must take into consideration your venue, time of wedding, and time of year when choosing the film.

How your wedding film is made (step-by-step)

  • Pre-Wedding Planning: We consult with you on how to make your wedding look best on our Super 8 film. The film is a limited resource, so we want to get it right, capturing the moments that matter most, and maybe not capturing the curtasy invites.
  • Filming on the Day: Using authentic Super 8 cine cameras loaded with real film stock, we shoot your most meaningful moments on super 8mm film.
  • Lab Processing: After your wedding, the exposed film is sent to a specialist lab to be developed, just like classic motion picture film.
  • Film Scanning & Digitising: The developed reels are scanned in high resolution by the lab.
  • Editing & Soundtrack: We will edit the clips together to tell the beautiful story of your wedding day. This includes three revisions. We can also edit the film to a song(s) of your choosing.
  • Final Delivery: We then send the digital copy of the film to you, to watch on repeat!

Those little black squares you can see along the edge of the frame are the sprocket holes (or perforations) in the film. These are the small rectangular holes that run along the edge of the film strip. They're what the camera's mechanical drive grips onto to advance the film forward one frame at a time. When a Super 8 film is scanned, the scanner sometimes captures slightly beyond the image area, making these holes visible at the edge of the picture. These can be easily removed if you do not want them.
